SEO Isn't Dead. Here's What Changed.

SEO Isn't Dead. Here's What Changed.

SEO Isn't Dead. Here's What Changed.

Every couple of years, someone announces that SEO is finished. This time the reason sounds convincing. ChatGPT answers the question. Google prints a summary at the top of the page. The click you used to earn never happens.

The headline is still wrong. But acting like it's true will cost you visibility that's hard to win back. Here's what actually changed, and what to do about it.

The page stopped being the finish line

Search used to end with a click. You ranked, someone visited, and the work paid off. Now a large share of searches end without anyone clicking anything. Google says its AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of U.S. searches, answering the question on the spot. People also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity directly, and those tools hand back one answer instead of ten links.

So your content has to earn its place twice now. Once from the algorithm that decides what's relevant. Once from the AI layer sitting on top of it, deciding what to quote.

When I work on a client's site now, I'm not just chasing a ranking anymore. I'm asking whether the page is clear enough that the AI layer will quote it too.

One job became three

SEO didn't disappear. It split into three jobs.

The first is the one you already know: ranking in normal search results. The second is getting your words pulled into an AI Overview. The third is getting your business named when someone asks an AI assistant a question in your field. Miss one and your traffic starts to sag. Cover all three and you show up in more places than you did before.

What still works

The fundamentals didn't flip. They got stricter. AI tools quote content that's clear, specific, and easy to lift. For your site, that means:

That list isn't theory. It's the same checklist I run every page through at Chapel, including this one.

None of it is a trick. It's the same thing that has always earned trust, now rewarded in more places.

What this means for you

Don't cut your search budget. Redeploy it. The same work that used to earn a ranking now earns a ranking and a citation at the same time. Authority, structure, and proof buy visibility in two places instead of one.

The real risk is standing still. The sites losing traffic right now are the ones still built for how search worked in 2019. The fix isn't chasing every new tool. It's making sure your pages answer real questions clearly enough that both Google and the AI layer want to use them.

That's the whole approach at Chapel. Not chasing tools, building pages worth quoting.

If you're not sure how your site shows up in AI search today, that's worth finding out. It's a straightforward thing to check, and it tells you exactly where you stand.
